Lithograph portrait, 7¼ x 10¾ inches including engraved border with title and dedication. The portrait depicts Miss Decamp [Marie Thérèse de Camp] as Urania, one of the nine Muses, and patron of Astronomy. She is shown striking a classical pose, wearing a flowing mantle and a dress covered in tiny stars.
Notes
Marie Thérèse de Camp was born in 1774, daughter of a French Army officer and a Swiss mother. From an early age she showed talent as a dancer and performer and by the mid-1790s was playing at the Haymarket and Drury Lane theatres and went on to write a number of plays. She married Charles Kemble, who with his sister Sarah (later Mrs Siddons) and brother John Philip, had made the acting profession 'respectable'. The Kemble theatrical dynasty continued with Marie Thérèse's daughter Fanny, a noted actress and authoress, whose younger sister was opera singer Adelaide Kemble.
