Bound in contemporary brown calf, gilt, with gilt borders on boards; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt. Inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Some wear to extremities and scattered foxing, especially on blank pages, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by facsimile. A two part article extracted from Blackwood's Edinburgh (published 1817-1905), Vol. 109, May and June 1871 and handsomely bound in leather. Signed only with the name Vera, this is a narrative account with much circumstantial detail of her experiences of nursing with the Red Cross (founded 1863) during the Franco-Prussian War. Joining in Munich, after obtaining the necessary authorisation on first December 1870, she travelled to France on board an ambulance train.
