4to. 9.5 x 7 inches. xviii + 82 pp. Title page in blue and black. Bound in blue cloth, gilt, over patterned boards (to a design by Edward Bawden). A little wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. 1949 signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by frontispiece, text figures in blue and black, including maps and diagrams. Decorated by chapter heading vignettes in blue and by publisher's device on title page. The aviation volume in the Shell War Achievements series. Illustrated by Laurence Scarfe (1914-93), artist and designer, known for his murals (including at the Festival of Britain) and for wallpaper designs. Book designed by Paul Hogarth, RA (1917-2001), artist and designer, known recently for for his Penguin Books cover designs. Boards after a design by the artist Edward Bawden (1903-89).
