8vo. 8.75 x 6 inches. 416 pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, in unclipped dust wrapper, which has sunned spine. A very good clean bright copy. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by 7 portrait plates. Acclaimed biography of Thomas More (1478-1535), Renaissance humanist and author of Utopia (1516). More a staunch Catholic and opponent of Protestantism served as Lord High Chancellor, 1529-32. He was executed on Tower Hill for refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy, recognising Henry VIII as Supreme Head of the Church of England.
