[2] + 632 pp. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, with contrasting black title label, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, with some edge wear, including chips at head of spine, which is sunned; otherwise a very good copy. Signature on first free endpaper. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Novel in the format of a rediscovered journal relating the story of the wartime Warsaw Ghetto, 1940-43, in Nazi occupied Poland. John Hersey (1914-93), born in China, was a US journalist and war correspondent, who adapted storytelling techniques of fiction to the reportage of real life events. His best known work was Hiroshima (1946). Wrapper designed by Barnett Freedman (1901-58), artist and illustrator.
