Signature on first free endpaper. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Novel in the format of a rediscovered journal relating the story of the wartime Warsaw Ghetto, 1940-43, in Nazi occupied Poland. John Hersey (1914-93), born in China, was a US journalist and war correspondent, who adapted storytelling techniques of fiction to the reportage of real life events. His best known work was Hiroshima (1946). Wrapper designed by Barnett Freedman (1901-58), artist and illustrator.
