Item Description

FIRST EDITION. 12mo. 7 x 4.5 inches. [2] + 4 pp. letterpress + 120 pages of plates + 15 pp. letterpress index. VOL. I ONLY. Bound in half leather over marbled boards; spine in compartments with gilt bands and contrasting red morocco title label, gilt. A little age related wear, and front hinge cracked, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by engraved frontispiece and title and 120 pages of engraved plates (with additional copy of plate 118). The volume consists of almost entirely of engravings (eight to a page) of cons and tokens, including many local issues. Trade tokens were issued at the end of the eighteenth century to compensate for a scarcity of minted coinage of the realm. An introduction, Observations on Coins, is contributed by James Wright. The work was originally issued in parts and Vol. II was published in 1797. It is frequently attributed to Thomas Prattent, although not by ESTC (T135332).
