The English author, Walter Alison Phillips (1864-1950), was Lecky Professor of History in the University of Dublin. The book is an expansion of his article on the recent political history of Ireland for the new volumes (twelfth edition) of the Encyclopaedia Britannica and is written from the standpoint of his support for the Union of Britain and Ireland. It makes use of police reports, referred to as Confidential Intelligence Notes, and other unprinted reports, many of which were destroyed before Dublin Castle was handed over to the new Provisional Government of Ireland. Published in the year that the Civil War came to end, this account provides a valuable contemporary account by someone who had just lived through the events described.
