Illustrated by genealogical table and map. Decorated by chapter heading and vignettes in text and by publisher's device on title page. Patterned endpapers. First edition, first printing, in dust wrapper of the of the author's eighth title in what she now calls The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels. Set in the period of the Wars of the Roses, the chief protagonist is Margaret Beaufort, heiress of the House of Lancaster, who is striving to put her son, Henry Tudor, on the throne of England. At the end of the main text are the Author's Note with reading list, A Guide for Reading Groups, A Conversation with Philippa Gregory and an extract from her next book, The Lady of the Rivers. The historical novelist (b.1954) has concentrated on the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries, but has also written contemporary fiction and children's books.
