Large, hand-coloured steel-engraving, 36 x 18 inches, in conservation mount. Overall size approximately 44 x 28 inches.
Notes
The scene depicted is characteristic of that which might have been seen anywhere in the country where boys gathered to play. On a pathway under trees, several dozen boys, under the gaze of a stovepipe-hatted gentleman with his wife, energetically indulge in popular pastimes such as football, marbles and, most particularly, whipping tops. Several tops are already in play and boys are in various stages of preparation for joining the fray, poised ready to cast the tops or winding the strings. A cricket bat and ball lie unattended in the foreground.
