Extremities a little worn and spine sunned; otherwise a very good copy. 1950 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Loosely inset: Obituary, Guardian, 20/9/90. An expanded version of the author's Inaugural Lecture on appointment to the Chair of Philosophy in the University of Durham in 1946. Written for the general reader, he examines the various schools of analytical philosophy, including the logical positivists, of whom he is critical. By William Herbert Frederick Barnes {1909-90), who was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, 1963-69, delivering the Gifford Lectures at the University of Edinburgh, 1968-70.
