An edition of Paradise Lost notable for the striking mezzotints of John Martin (1789-1854), famous for his paintings of Apocalyptic scenes. He 'relied on the poetry itself rather than previous interpretations. He faithfully translated the solemn pace, the set expressions of ecstasy and horror, the perfect order of paradise compared to the echoing, hollow fabrications of Satan's underworld' (Feaver). Klingender considers that 'Industry was the ultimate source of many of Martin's designs,' including the hell of Paradise Lost created from 'a jumble of images' including 'flooded, gas-filled coal-mines...romantic views of open-cast iron mines...and modern gas-light equipment.' The first edition with John Martin plates appeared in a larger format in 1827.
This copy lacking two plates featuring the angel Raphael is sold as a collection of John Martin mezzotints.
