Illustrated by 12 pages of plates, including frontispiece, by folding map and by folding facsimile at end. Decorated by the Institute of Navigation device on title page. The first part of the work is a narrative account, the second biographies of 582 practitioners and the third an annotated bibliography of their 628 works. Eva Germaine Rimington Taylor was a mathematician and historian of science, professor of geography at Birkbeck College, University of London, 1930-44.
