8vo. 9.5 x 6.5 inches. ix + [iii] + 287 pp. Bound in original dark blue cloth, gilt, with blind stamped front borders. A little wear to extremities, including bumped lower front corner. Flyleaves browned, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece, facsimile plate and by text figure. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Nicholas Cresswell, (1750-1804), born in Edale, Derbyshire, travelled to Virginia in 1774 and kept a diary until he returned to England in 1777. He records his impressions of the country and its farming potential as well as his reaction to the news of the outbreak of the Revolution. A Loyalist, he decided to return home, visiting British occupied New York, where he made the acquaintance of General Howe, before sailing. Preface signed Samuel Thornely, Chichester 1924.
