FIRST UK EDITION. 8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. [2[ + 256 pp. + [32] pp. publisher's list dated 1872. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, with blind stamped borders enclosing decoration on both boards. Bevelled edges. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine, which is sunned. Hinges starting to crack and occasional scattered foxing and marks; otherwise a very good copy. Bookplate. UK printing of chapters one to thirty one of Mark Twain's best selling travel book of 1869, The Innocents Abroad, describing his 1867 cruise in the Quaker City, with frequent excursions ashore. This first part covers the excursion as far as the visit to Pompeii; the second part being advertised at the front as Journey Home, The New Pilgrim's Progress. The author's characteristic opinionated narrative in the complete work covered visits to France, Italy, Greece, North Africa, Turkey and Russia. The 1872 publisher's list is likely to have been added later to unbound copies of the 1870 printing., apparently a yellowback. The travelling companion was Edward Peron Hingston (c.1823-76) (Refs. McBride p.11 and BAL 3590).
