8vo. 6.75 x 4.25 inches. [2] + ii + v + [i] + 232 pp. Bound in maroon cloth, with gilt title block on front board and later contrasting leather spine label, gilt. Extremities worn and a little stained, and occasional foxing; otherwise a very good copy with clean interior. Early signatures on title page and front pastedown. Illustrated by folding Plan of the Town of Folkestone, by vignette title, 17 steel and wood engraved plates, including frontispiece, and one in colour and by numerous engravings in text. Decorated by head and tailpiece vignettes. A good copy of an early Folkestone guide. First published in 1848, this enlarged edition notes the new buildings and improvements as the town expanded after the coming of the railway. Stock published several versions of this title and this seems to be the basic pocket version without the more elaborate folding plates which are found in some of his guides of this date. The binding is also less elaborate, but much more pocket sized. This was probably the least costly of Stocks very upmarket guides but seems not to have survived as well, hence very scarce. Stock used delightful and unusual engravings as illustrations; the view of the parish church shows the building before restoration. The two splendid views of the town's most striking feature, the Viaduct, celebrate the coming of the Railway (Goulden, p.59, 21).
