Small 8vo. 6.75 x 4.5 inches. xii + 220 pp. + [4] pp. advertisements. Bound in original blue cloth with white titles and art nouveau style pictorial blocks on front board. Some minor wear to corners, rubbing of spine titles and traces of spotting on fly leaves and title page; otherwise a very good clean copy. Signature on front pastedown. Illustrated by frontispiece, by 73 text figures and by tables. Dated from preface. A standard work on the structure of the honey bee, the first edition was published 1890. Thomas William Cowan (1840-1926) was the co-founder of the British Beekeepers Association in 1874. His collection of bee literature, forming The Cowan Memorial Library, is now held as the Cowan Bee Collection by the Museum of English Rural Life, University of Reading.
