THIRD REPRINT OF FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8 x 5.75 inches. 445 pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, with author photograph on rear wrapper, which has edge wear, including chips at head and tail of spine. Top edge original dark purplish brown. Otherwise a very good copy, with clean interior. Previous owner's signature to front free endpaper. Pictorial endpapers. The third reprint of the first edition in unclipped dust wrapper, of the author's third novel, first published in 1969. Set in the mid-nineteenth century in the Dorset coastal town of Lyme Regis, the French lieutenant's woman is a disgraced woman supposedly abandoned by a French naval officer. The novel is notable for period detail, derived from its contemporary quotations and use of background material from Human Documents of the Victorian Golden Age. Adapted into a successful film of the same name in 1981.
