12mo. 5.75 x 3.75 inches. The Fatal Dowry, 65 + [1] pp. The Fair Penitent, 45 + [1] pp. Bound in contemporary black patterned cloth. Extremities a little worn and occasional foxing, including first frontispiece, which has water stain on verso. and title page, which has stamp, Schmidt. Illustrated with a fine engraving by Mr. White from a drawing by Mr. R. Cruickshank. Two versions of the same play bound as one, by the late Jacobean dramatist, Philip Massinger (1583-1640). The Fatal Dowry was jointly written by Massinger and Nathan Field (1587-1620), composed around 1619 and first published 1632. It was rewritten and adapted for the stage by Nicholas Rowe (1674-1718) as The Fair Penitent, first performed in 1702 and published in 1703. These are acting editions of the plays as performed at the Theatres Royal Drury Lane and Covent Garden, with stage directions, cast lists (The Fatal Dowry list is dated 1825), etc. by the theatrical publisher, John Cumberland (1787-1866). The two titles were also published as plays 61 and 64 of the Cumberland's British Theatre series (Folgerpedia website).
