Milman was Professor of Poetry at Oxford and later Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral, London. His dramatic poem The Martyr of Antioch was adapted by Gilbert and Sullivan for a sacred musical drama composed for and introduced at the Leeds Triennial Festival, October 15, 1880. Milman is perhaps better known for his editing of Gibbon's 'Decline and Fall..'
