The Entomologist’s Useful Compendium :.

SAMOUELLE, GEORGE..

Bound in the original half morocco gilt over marbled boards. Spine in compartments and a contrasting title label. A very attractive copy, free from foxing and with very clean, fine plates. The frontis and plate two are uniformly lightly browned, but this is a much better copy than is frequently found.

Item Description

First Edition, 496 pp. Illustrated with a hand-coloured frontispiece and 11 very fine hand-coloured plates illustrating over 150 figures.

Notes

This is the first edition of a book which really opened up the study of insects to the inquiring minds of the emerging middle classes, and it remained in print in various editions for many years, becoming one of the classics of the heyday of British natural history. The first edition is scarce not only because of a lower print run than the later editions but also most copies were literally worn out by frequent use both in the field and library.
