The first part of the book surveys the principal breeds of dog, the second is concerned with breeding, rearing, training and management and the third covers the treatment of diseases. The author acknowledges that his work, which was first published in 1859, was partly based on William Youatt, the Dog. John Henry Walsh (1810-88), surgeon and writer on sport, used the pseudonym, Stonehenge. He also published on the greyhound, the horse, British rural sports and served as Editor of The Field.
