4to. 10.5 x 8 inches. [2] + xvii + [iii] + 362. Bound in black leather, decorated gilt; spine in compartments with raised bands and gilt decorations and titles. Watered silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Illustrated by coloured portrait frontispiece, by Edward W. Acuna and by drawings in text by Fritz Kredel. Based on the 1877 edition of The Descent of Man, first published 1871, this version reduces the eleven chapters of the section on sexual selection in the lower animals to three. The work included the word 'evolution' for the first time in any of Darwin's works (in this edition, in Darwin's Introduction, p. xv). Edited by Ashley Montagu (1905-99), anthropologist and biologist, who emigrated to the US in 1931. He is known for his books, Man's Most Dangerous Myth: The Fallacy of Race (1942) and The Natural Superiority of Women (1952). Text illustrated by Fritz Kredel (1900-73), German American artist. This edition first published 1972.
