Notes
Published anonymously but attributed to Joseph Trapp (1679-1747), a famous pamphleteer and a high church and high Tory clergyman. Trapp became the first Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1708 but was chiefly known among his contemporaries for his polemical political pamphlets, of which this is one of the most noteworthy examples. He was appointed as chaplain to the Tory Viscount Bolingbroke but after the Hanoverian succession, concentrated on his pastoral duties in several London parishes. In 1734 he wrote: 'I have lived in six reigns, but for above twenty past, the English nation has been so prodigiously debauched that I am almost a foreigner in my own country.' The pamphlet was first published in 1711 and another edition appeared in 1714. Our copy differs slightly from the ESTC example quoted as the date, 1712, is included on the imprint and is hence very scarce.
