A brief history of the microscope is followed by a three part catalogue of these instruments. Part I covers the the pre-1966 collections which were developed by Lieutenant Colonel John S. Billing, Curator of the Army Medical Museum, 1883-1893, who acquired many microscopes from Europe. Part II comprises the Kaas Collection acquired in Europe in 1966 and Part III lists the instruments acquired since the publication of the First Edition of this catalogue in 1967. Within each section the microscopes are divided by categories such as compound monocular and binocular microscopes, etc.
