FIRST EDITION THUS. 12mo. 7.75 x 5.75 inches. xvi + 224 pp. Bound in later half brown paper spine with printed paper label, over stiff grey boards. Rough cut edges. Some browning and spotting of edges and last few pages, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by engraved frontispiece. Decorated by endpiece vignette. Early nineteenth century selection from the works of Fran?ois Fenelon (1651-1715), theologian and writer, who served as Archbishop of Cambrai, 1695-1715, translated from the French. He was known for The Fables originally composed for the education of the Duke of Burgundy (eldest son of the Dauphin), to whom F?n?lon was tutor and for his Adventures of Telemachus, an attack on the divine right absolute monarchy, as exemplified by Louis XIV. The main part of the text is the selected passages from Ambition to Zeno followed by Miscellaneous Extracts. Scarce early edition of a work which later appeared in 1834.
