8vo. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. xi + [i] + 224 pp. + [4] pp. index + [6] pp. original publisher's advertisements. Bound in navy cloth, gilt, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has lightly sunned edges and missing section at head of spine; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 308 numbered text figures, in the original on 107 leaves of engraved plates. Decorated by reprint publisher's device on title page. Facsimile reprint of the second edition of 1862, of the manual of seamanship and navigation by Lieutenant George S. Nares, later Vice-Admiral, who had a distinguished naval career as Arctic explorer and surveyor, leading the Challenger and British Arctic Expeditions. The first edition of Seamanship was published in 1860 as The Naval Cadet's Guide: or Seaman's Companion and seven editions were published up to 1897. This new version has an introduction by David R. MacGregor.
