Notes
A novel about the humorous adventures of a party of one Canadian and three Yankees, including Sam Slick, a minister of religion and a black servant, in England. It includes many interesting observations on the modes and manners of the day. Published anonymously it is known to be the work of Thomas Chandler Haliburton, (1796-1865). Haliburton was a judge in Nova Scotia but became better known as an author, the first from what later became Canada, to become an international best-seller. Haliburton settled in England in 1856 and served as MP for Launceston, 1859-65. The novel was first published in 1843 as The Attaché, or, Sam Slick in England. This 1864 edition in Routledge's Railway Library is scarce and does not appear in COPAC.
