Notes
Running title: The Tryal of the Seven Bishops. The proceedings against William Sancroft, Archbishop of Canterbury and six other bishops for publishing a seditious libel against James II. The jury found them not guilty, thereby asserting the rights of juries to return verdicts contrary to the wishes of the government. This outcome helped to pave the way for the revolution of 1688-89, which saw the overthrow of James II, following the successful invasion by William of Orange.
