Notes
William Beveridge (1637-1708) was a high church scholar, educated at Cambridge, who was ordained in 1661 and held the livings of Ealing and later St Peter Cornhill. After receiving further church preferments he was appointed Bishop of St Asaph in 1704. Beveridge's writings, including his sermons, were very popular and went into numerous editions. Many, such as this title, were not published until after his death. Private Thoughts first appeared in 1709 and remained in publication well into the nineteenth century. This particular edition without a named publisher is very scarce and ESTC records only one copy, in the British Library.
