FIRST EDITION. 7.75 x 5.5 inches. viii + 260 pp. + [3] pp. publisher's advertisement. Bound in original green cloth, with printed paper spine title label. Rough edges. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine, which is sunned. Occasional scattered foxing and front endpapers show traces of inscription removal; otherwise a very good copy. Signature on first free endpaper and stamp on rear pastedown and several other pages. First edition of essays on art and literary criticism and history, including chapters on Montaigne, Ibsen, Boswell, Carlyle, William Morris and the Greek playwrights. By Clive Bell (1881-1964), art critic and member of the Bloomsbury Group. It was his second published work after Art of 1914 (see advertisement pages).
