Item Description

The first edition. Pastedowns and endpapers are printed with a "Cuckoo's Eye View of Monk's Norton Worcs.". 9" x 6?", 179 pages. Black buckram with gilt motif of 3 pears in a circle on the front cover and gilt titles to the spine. Condition very good. Joan Hassall OBE was an English wood engraver and book illustrator. Her subject matter ranged from natural history through poetry to illustrations for English literary classics. In 1972 she was elected the first woman Master of the Art Workers' Guild and in 1987 was awarded the OBE.
