Notes
Jean Marteilhe, a French Hugenot, was condemned for his religion and sentenced to the galleys. His account of his life in the galleys is unique and such worthies as Oliver Goldsmith (James Willington) published translations. Matilda Bertham-Edwards, a prolific writer herself and native French speaker, translated and sympathetically edited the account for the benefit of younger readers and the result was published by Blackie in the 'School and Home Library' series. Scarce.
