8vo. 8.5 x 5.5 inches. Generally c.70-80 pp. per issue plus advertisement pages. In pictorial card wrappers. A little wear to extremities with some foxing and sunning of spines; otherwise a very good run. Illustrated by 44 pages of black and white photographic plates and by text figures. The Cornhill Magazine was a literary journal which ran from 1860 to 1975. It was founded by G. M. Smith, with W. M. Thackeray as its first editor and named after the street address of its first publisher, Smith Elder and Co. In its Victorian heyday it serialised a number of significant works, including the writings of Trollope, Gaskell, Eliot, Ruskin, Hardy, Matthew Arnold, Henry James, etc. These nine post-war issues include contributions from Laurens van der Post, Freya Stark, Clive Bell, Jacquetta Hawkes, Patrick Leigh Fermor, Iris Origo, Harold Nicolson, Norman Mailer and two poems by John Betjeman.
