Notes
Edward Boys (1785-1866) was born at Betteshanger, educated at the King's School, Canterbury and entered the navy in 1796. He was appointed midshipman to the frigate Phoebe in 1802 but was captured the following year off Toulon, when in charge of a prize. He was held prisoner at Verdun and Valenciennes for six years but eventually succeeded in escaping from the latter. On his return to England in 1809 he was promoted to lieutenant and served in the West Indies, where he wrote the narrative of his adventures in 1810, although he was not persuaded to publish it until 1827 (with a second edition appearing in 1831). This is the very scarce illustrated third edition, the fourth appearing in 1864. Boys also published 'Remarks on the Practicality and Advantages of a Sandwich or Deal Harbour' in 1831 and was Superintendent of Deal dockyard, 1837-1841. He retired with the rank of Captain in 1851.
Scarce early copy of this exciting true story which inspired Captain Marryatt's Peter Simple.
