First edition of the fifth fiction title to appear by Robert Smith Surtees (1805-64) of Hamsterley Hall, Co. Durham. His first novel featuring Jorrocks, his sporting cockney squire, appeared in 1838 and this Sporting Tour, featuring his new hero, Soapey Sponge, is regarded as one of his best works. A handsomely bound first edition, illustrated by John leech.
