FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. ix + [i] + 687 + [1] pp. Bound in contemporary half calf over purple boards, gilt; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting green morocco title label, gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. A little wear to extremities and slight sunning to top of front board. Portrait has edge foxed and some occasional traces of foxing elsewhere; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 24 wood engraved plates, including folding frontispiece and portrait of author, one folding letterpress and engraved landscape section, 2 folding maps with one in pocket at end and by 19 wood engravings in text. Decorated by title page vignette. First edition of the central southern African narrative of David Livingstone, missionary, scientist and explorer, in which he describes his residence in the area and his crossing of the continent from the Atlantic to the Indian Oceans. This is a variant of the first edition with no extra page after 8 and wood engravings replacing two tinted lithographs. (Printing and the Mind of Man 341).
