TWO VOLUMES OUT OF THREE. 8vo. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. Volume One, 294 pp.; Volume Two, 388 pp. Bound in original black cloth, gilt, in unclipped dust wrappers with minor edge wear and sunned spines. Volume Two with some damp stains on front board and spine has ink underlining, largely concentrated in the first part of the chapter on Thomas Hobbes. A history of political philosophy first published 1942 and 47 and reprinted numerous times. Volume One which covers Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Augustine, Aquinas and Machiavelli is by Michael Beresford Foster (1903-59), tutor in philosophy at Christ Church, Oxford; Volume Two covers Machiavelli again, Bodin, Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Burke and Bentham and is by William Thomas Jones (1910-98), US philosopher, edited by Edward McChesney Salt.
