FIRST UK EDITION. 8vo. 7.5 x 5.5 inches. xiv, with [4] pp. series list + 385 pp. + [3] blank + 80 pp. publisher's Classified List of Publications, 1892. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, decorated by black series titles. Some wear to extremities and sunning of spine, but otherwise a very good clean copy. 1969 signature on verso of second free endpaper. Illustrated by 3 folding maps, including frontispiece and by 108 text figures, including whole page, maps and diagrams. Decorated by title vignette at start of text. Study of the glacial period in the western and eastern hemispheres by George Frederick Wright (1838-1921, academic geologist and Congregational minister, who travelled extensively over the world researching his books. He worked with the US Geological Survey, 1884-92 and as a Christian Darwinist, reconciled the theory of evolution with his religious vocation. The Appendix on Tertiary Man is by US archaeologist, Henry Williamson Haynes (1831-1912). First published in the US in the same year, this is a scarce copy of the first UK edition.
