8vo. 7.5 x 5 inches. [iv] + 243 + [1] pp. + [1] pp. contents page. Bound in original brown cloth, boards with blind stamped borders enclosing gilt and coloured ornamental blocks; spine decorated gilt with contrasting title label, gilt. Extremities worn at edges, with some loss of surface layer on spine and lower rear board. Scattered foxing throughout, including half title and title page, but otherwise a very good copy. Manuscript school prize inscription, 1864 on half title. Illustrated by 8 chromolithograph plates, including frontispiece. Decorated by headpiece vignettes and by publisher's device on title page. Orientalism for the young reader - tales with an Algerian setting, attractively illustrated. A title in the publisher's Library of Childhood and Youth. Most sources give the date of the work as 1865, but this copy has an inscription dated 1864.
