12mo. 6.5 x 4 inches. xxxix + [i] + 212 pp. Bound in contemporary grained calf, with decorative gilt borders to boards; spine in compartments with gilt bands decorated gilt, with contrasting maroon title label, gilt. Inner dentelles. Marbled boards. All edges marbled. Extremities show signs of age wear and top edge darkened; otherwise a very good crisp copy. Early signature on first free endpaper. A best selling conduct book for women first published in 1773 which appeared in numerous editions. Hester Chapone, nee Mulso (1727-1801) received a very good education for a woman of her day and wrote a romantic novel at the age of nine, later becoming associated with the London Bluestocking movement; the letters were originally addressed to her fifteen year old niece. She advocated advocated a broad based education for young women grounded on Christian principles and covering literature, history, geography and household management. The book also included chapters on the Regulation of the Heart and Affections, the Government of the Temper and on Politeness and Accomplishments. An attractive copy, printed by Charles Whittingham (1767-1840), the year before he founded the Chiswick Press in 1811.
