Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn, hop and other commodity prices at the London markets and Canterbury. Overseas the US vessel, Firebrand was attacked and seized off Vera Cruz by Spanish warships who denied their right to navigate the Gulf of Mexico. Several columns are devoted to the trial of Thomas Cochrane, the naval officer and hero who was charged with escaping from custody following an accusation of alleged stock exchange fraud. The severity of the 1816 weather causing problems with the operation of water mills and the activity of speculators had resulted in a ' strong and uneasy sensation...by an unexpected increase in the price of corn, although thirty vessels laden with grain were expected to sail from Danzig for London and Liverpool. In Kent mares were reported lost from Shepherdswell and stolen from Benenden and underwood was to be sold by auction at the Duke of Cumberland, Petham, the Chequers in Stone Street and the Lord Nelson, Waltham.
