Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn, hop and other commodity prices at the London markets and Canterbury. In overseas news it was reported that about 13,000 British subjects were currently resident in France and that the war with 'Nepaul' had been ended by treaty; in the last of 'several smart actions...the enemy resisted with great bravery.' At home a wide selection of police and assize reports were printed. On the civil side the Berkeley Hunt was fined for trespassing 'over lands belonging to an association of gentlemen in the neighbourhood of Harrow and Pinner.' In Kent tolls were to be let by auction by the Maidstone [through Detling] and Key Street and New Cross Turnpike Trusts and the proprietors of Margate Pier gave a grand dinner. 'The long continued wet weather' (1816 was known as the year without a summer, it is now known caused by the 1815 eruption of Tambora), injured the clover and hay crops and drilled barley although it was considered the wheats and corn in general were still promising.
