Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and Hop Intelligence and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. Accounts are given of a Russian voyage of discovery, sailing via Cape Horn and the Pacific to the Arctic to search for a North East passage towards Behring's straits and of an English expedition to Libya to discover not 'the ponderous monuments of Egyptian labour,' but Greek and Roman remains. George IV made an official visit to his kingdom of Hanover. In London a fire starting in the premises of an oil and colourman ignited some stored gunpowder. A large crowd of returning theatregoers assembled to watch the conflagration, hindering the fireman and providing opportunity for a gang of twenty or thirty thieves to not only rob the assembled multitude but also to plunder nearby houses of plate, the civil power being inadequate to control them. The new steam packet, HMS Dasher arrived at Dover to begin a mail service to Calais.
