Notes
Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. The Commons debated the Foreign Enlistment Bill, caused by concern over British half-pay officers joining the South American insurgent armies fighting the colonial power, Spain, while Britain was officially neutral. In Central America the rebel army under General M'Gregor, including numerous British officers, was defeated by the Spanish from Panama under the command of former Irish rebel, General Hore. Lord Byron's latest poem, Mazola, is reviewed. In Kent a servant girl at Cranbrook attempted to light some tinder with a match and some gunpowder from a powder horn which exploded, blowing her hand to pieces and setting her on fire. Her mistress intervened to extinguish her dress but was also burned.
