Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Hop Intelligence and Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. In this issue, troops and their families of the British occupation forces are continuing to disembark at Dover, including the Royal Artillery. Other arriving regiments, including the Rifle Brigade joined the depot at Shorncliffe, although one battalion had to leave again to embark for Ireland. A long account is given of the death of Sir Samuel Romilly (1757-1818) the reformer of the criminal law, who had managed to get the penalty of hanging, drawing and quartering removed from the statute book, who had cut his throat while suffering from fever and acute anxiety. Detailed accounts are given of several violent crimes with victims left 'weltering' in their blood for the sake of some 'silver and halfpence.' The remarkable mildness of the season had led to second crops of young fruit in Kent.
