Notes
The first English edition of a comprehensive study of Japan, commissioned by the government of Prussia and carried out in 1874-75. It covers the physiography, including flora and fauna, with an account of the Japanese people, including ethnography, and the topography of Japan, a detailed survey of the provinces and districts.
This massive work, first published in German in 1881, was the sole responsibility of Johannes Justus Rein (1835-1918), Professor of Geography at the University of Marburg, 1876-83 and at the University of Bonn, 1883-1910. Rein's second volume, 'The Industries of Japan', was published in German in 1886 and in English in 1889.
A work of primary importance for the development of western understanding of the newly industrialising Empire of Japan.
