Notes
Greek Old Testament or Septuagint, including Apocrypha, in the Sixtine text of 1587, edited by Dr. Leander van Ess (1777-1847) for the use of theological students and printed in Leipzig. Van Ess, a German Catholic theologian from Westphalia whose birth name was Johann Heinrich. He served as professor of Theology at the University of Marburg but later resigned and devoted all his time to promoting the distribution of bibles in the vernacular and translating the Catholic bible into German (he had published the New Testament in 1807 and completion of the Old Testament eventually followed in 1836). A handsome edition of the Greek Septuagint.
