Item Description
Original watercolour, 25.5 17.5 cm, unframed mounted in conservation materials. Signed W.G Having been preserved within a portfolio for most of its life, the colours are extremely fresh and bright. Walter Gandy lived in London at the turn of the 20th Century, and travelled throughout England and the near continent, painting picturesque landscapes and urban scenes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1911 (a painting entitled 'Grey Bruges'), and is listed as a subscriber to Crossley's 'English Church Woodwork; A Study in Craftsmanship during the Mediaeval Period, A.D. 1250-1550', published in 1919. This was a seminal study of Gothic regional church art, commissioned by Herbert Batsford, who died before its publication and to whom it is dedicated. Gandy's interest in this subject is reflected in his sketchbooks, many of which are are filled with drawings of rural churches and their interiors in exquisite detail.
