Item Description

10.5 x 7.5 inches. Original signed watercolour on paper. Some light foxing but otherwise very good condition. Very little is known about the Reverend GE Howman; he changed his name, probably in 1874, to Rev. George Ernest Little, after an inheritance of lands at Newbold Pacey (Warwickshire) where he died on 3 August 1878. He was rector of Barnsley (Gloucestershire) and headmaster of Saint Nicholas Sarum Hospital (Wiltshire). He had at least one daughter Louisa, who married in 1852. We know of a strange watercolor by him, dated 1829 and kept in the Philpot Museum in Lyme Regis (Dorset), less for its artistic interest than as a very probable discovery of a pterodactyl fossil.
