Notes
An unusual Dover engraving, the viewpoint is from the high ground to the east of Buckland looking towards the sea with the Castle in the distance on the left and the western heights on the right, with the town, showing the beginnings of industrial development, laid out between. By this date it had become uncommon to issue topographical engravings on this scale as photography was firmly established. However, the Company of Stationers had been issuing a large printed almanac each year for over a hundred years, following the same pattern - a large engraved view of an important place in Great Britain, commissioned each year, and below this a printed almanac for the year. These were designed to be hung in offices, at Railway stations and in the home. Dover had been represented in the series in the 1840's and so much had changed in the interim that the Stationers Company commissioned this new view. The views were by now sold as separate prints without the almanac, as in this example.
